Start the new year with a new dog or cat

NORMAN — Q: What’s black and white and needs a good home?

A: An adult male pitbull mix available for adoption, along with several other friendly and lovable dogs and cats, at the Norman Animal Shelter.

He doesn’t have a name or a home, but he has kind eyes, a gentle disposition and black and white markings.

If dogs could wish, this dog was wishing for a forever home for Christmas. It’s not too late to make that wish come true, if you’re ready to start the new year with a new dog.

He hasn’t been selected by adoptive owners for a new home yet, but he’s gentle, sweet and gets along well with other dogs.

“He’s not animal aggressive,” Animal Control officer Stan Koonce said.

The black and white male is often walked by one of the older volunteers. He’s no trouble on the leash but resists returning to the cage in the section of old kennels where he currently resides. There’s not room for all of the adoptable dogs in the more recently built adoption center, so some animals have to wait in the old kennels until the new facility is built.

Those plans are under way, but in the meantime, some animals are waiting for a home.

All animals adopted through the Norman Animal Shelter have vaccination shots and are spayed or neutered and microchipped prior to adoption. The adoption fee is $60 and includes the spay/neuter, vaccinations, de-worming and heartworm, lyme disease and ehrilchia testing. This price also includes the Norman city pet license.

During cold weather, animal welfare officers remind people to make sure outside pets have adequate food, water and shelter from the elements.

When it’s freezing outside, pets and other domestic animals require fresh water daily because water bowls freeze.

“Water’s even more important now in cold weather,” Animal Supervisor John Bowman said. “People tend to forget about water in cold weather.”

During the coldest days, it’s a good idea to bring animals in at night. Turn dog house doors toward the south to prevent cold, north winds from entering. Sporting dogs should wear boots when working in the snow and ice to avoid tearing the pads on their feet.

The Animal Shelter, 3428 S. Jenkins Ave., will be open from 9 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Monday, New Year’s Eve, but will be closed on Tuesday, New Year’s Day.
