Commission to hire director

NORMAN — SQ 765 proposes reform of DHS

The Oklahoma Commission for Human Services will have a special meeting 10:30 a.m. today in the Sequoyah State Office Building, Room C-48, Oklahoma City, regarding the “interviewing and hiring of a permanent director of the Department of Human Services,” according to the meeting agenda.

The commission has scheduled an executive session, which will allow members to discuss potential applicants for the DHS director position.

Following the executive session, the commission will discuss and possibly vote “to select and appoint a director of Human Services and to fix a salary for the position pursuant to Article 25, Section 4 of the Oklahoma Constitution,” according to the agenda.

The hiring of a new director is the only thing on the agenda.

On Nov. 6, voters may pass a measure that would eliminate the commission as part of a sweeping measure to reform the DHS.

If passed, State Question 765 will remove the Department of Public Welfare (now called DHS), its commission and director from the state’s constitution.

It will allow the legislature to create and direct the administration of a new department to provide for public welfare.

The governor would then appoint the new director.

Currently, Oklahoma Secretary of Finance Preston Doerflinger serves as the interim DHS director.
