NORMAN — Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday for the General Election. Jim Williams, Secretary of the Cleveland County Election Board, offered voters some tips on how to make votes count.

Williams said that Oklahoma recently began using a new voting system. Voters who have not yet voted using this system will notice that the ballot is different. Instead of filling in an arrow as before, voters will now fill in a box next to their selection.If voters make mistakes marking their ballots, Williams said they should not try to correct those errors. Instead, voters should return the spoiled ballot to the Precinct Officials, who will destroy it and issue a new ballot to the voter.

Williams said that voters who want to get through the lines quickly should vote at mid-morning or mid-afternoon, because those usually are the two slowest periods for voting during the day. “Anyone who is eligible and in line at the polling place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday will be entitled to vote,” he added.

Williams also reminded voters to bring identification that conforms to the Voter ID law. Voters may use their Voter Identification Card as proof of identity. Other Identification used to prove identity must be issued by the State of Oklahoma, The Federal Government or a federally recognized Indian Tribe or Nation. State Law requires voters to prove their identity before they are allowed to vote. Documents, other than a Voter ID card, used for proof of identity must include your name, which must match your name on your voter registration record, a photograph of you, and an expiration date that is later than Election Day. Voters who need a Temporary Voter Identification Card may obtain one at the Cleveland County Election Board located at 641 E. Robinson, Suite 200, Norman.

Voters who are unsure of where to vote may look up their polling place at www.clevelandcountyelectionboard.com by using the polling place locator. The Cleveland County Election Board phone number is 366-0210.
