Early voting starts today

NORMAN — Early voting starts at 8 a.m. today at the Cleveland County Election Board, 641 E. Robinson St., Suite 200 in Norman. Because this is a federal as well as state and local election, office hours are extended until 6 p.m. today for anyone who wants to vote early.

Eligible voters don’t have to give an excuse for voting early, Cleveland County Election Board Secretary Jim Williams said.

“In-person absentee voters fill out an application form when they arrive. They are not required to state a reason for voting in-person absentee,” Williams said. “They are required to swear that they have not voted a regular mail absentee ballot and that they will not vote at their polling places on Election Day.”

Voters must meet all eligibility requirements to vote as a registered voter living in the county to vote early, otherwise known as in-person absentee, at the election board office.

Early voting will continue from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, also at the county election board office.

The Cleveland County Election Board has implemented several measures to accommodate the large volume of voters expected to vote early at the Election Board office.

“We are doing everything possible to decrease — and perhaps eliminate — the need to stand in line waiting to vote,” Williams said. “Voters will be given a number when they report to the voting area. There will be a seating area for the voters to wait until their number is called and it is their turn to vote. And we will have at least four check-in stations to process voters during the in-person voting hours.”

During these days, drive-through voting assistance will also be available for voters who are not physically able to enter the polling place.
