School bells

Little Axe

Second grade teacher Mrs. Duroy has received $500 from the 2008 Oklahoma Home and Community Education Inc. Classroom Teacher Grant.??

In order to receive this grant, Mrs. Duroy had to submit a proposal and agree to complete a related project in one year.?The project will consist of a community garden behind the school including tilling, fertilizing, planting, growing, fencing, etc.?

University of Oklahoma students came to work with third-graders on a science class.?College students presented a lesson to third grade students on ants and what attracts them.?Third-graders took a piece of paper and marked it with a pencil to make four areas on the page.?They added food to the areas, such as honey, yogurt, and ketchup and put it on the ground to see which foods attracted more ants.?In evaluating the results, strawberry jam attracted the most ants.

A character-building school assembly, NED, was Oct. 21.

Norman High School

Norman High's production of "The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek" received fourth place at the OSSAA State One-Act competition held at Northwest Classen school in Oklahoma City Oct. 24.?Ranks from the three judges were 1-4-6. Senior Ariana Azimi was named to the All-State cast list, ranking her with the top four actors in the state, for her role as Pace Creagan. Norman High will present the play for the public in January.

?Jefferson

Fifth grade teachers would like to thank all of the families who helped with the Fifth Grade All-City Concert.

Monday, students will take part in a student vote. Students will be able to cast their vote for the candidate of their choice.

A skating party at Skateland will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The Firth Quarter Awards Ceremony will be 8 a.m. Thursday. Honor roll students and attendance will be honored.

Parent/teacher conferences will be Thursday evening and Friday.

Eisenhower

Kindergarten has been having great times learning about pumpkins,?farms and bones. Students will learn about community helpers next week.

Fifth grade students participated in the All City Chorus Concert this past week.

Eisenhower will host visitors from Japan Tuesday. They will be welcomed during Good Morning Eisenhower and then tour the school and visit classrooms. Mrs. Nally and Mrs. Seybolt's classrooms will share a lesson that will involve the visitors.

Kennedy

Monday through Friday: Book fair

Thursday: Veteran's Day assembly at 8 a.m., picture retakes and parent/teacher conferences 3-8 p.m.

Friday: No school, parent teacher conferences 8 a.m. to noon

Nov. 11: Skateland fundraiser, 6-8 p.m.

Student council has been conducting a voter registration drive for a mock election. Tuesday, student council will work the polling place, checking the voter ID cards and issuing ballots.

Ms. Isaac's kindergarten class has a bulletin board they made into a window. They hang each day's weather on the window and change the view to fit the season they are in. At the beginning of the year the children created the recess area as their view.

First-graders read books, created books and did activities relating to nocturnal animals.

A peer mediation program to help solve problems that arise in their classes has started. Fourth grade peer mediators are Bradon Barrett, Cheyanne Bettelyoun, McKenzi Clark, Nathan Ferrell, Rachel Graham, Brenna Isbill, Tiffany Jordan, Alyssa Lane, Mason Mohr and Euriah Morris. Fifth grade mediators are Yacob Abusadah, Laura Cooper, Isabel Godinez, Tylisha Jones, Tommi Littlejohn, Trenton McMillen, Lauren Nelson, Kamrin Ratcliff, Zainab Sandhu and Baylea Sims.

Cleveland

Thanks to all the Cleveland parents who helped with fall parties.

A thanks to the University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team for coming out and joining students for parties. Thanks to all the teachers and staff who entered the Teacher Creature contest.

A bookfair safari will be this week in the library.?There will be a family reading night 5-8 p.m. Thursday. Those who would like to help with the book fair can contact Sharon Ibach.

This week will be the first parent/ teacher conference of the year.

Congratulations to the all the jog-a-thon award winners. Congratulations to fifth grader William Ezzell who raised the most money in the entire school.

Truman

Truman's book fair will be Monday through Friday in the media center. There will be a large selection of books, puzzles, video material, etc.?The book fair will be opened Thursday until 8 p.m. during?parent/teacher conferences which are 5- 8 p.m.

There will be no school Friday, but the fair will be open until noon.

Tuesday, there will be a mock presidential election for all students.?Each class will visit the voting area and they will receive an I voted sticker to wear.?Thanks to teacher Alicia Steer for making all of this possible.

Nov. 11, the Sooner Theatre will perform for the school. They will present a part of the musical "Annie."

Nov. 14, will be "United We Write," directed by teachers Johnnie Keel and Kim Schooler.?Students may sign up for an evening of writing fun and adventure.

Second grade will practice buying and selling items using money in math.?Fourth grade is working on multiplication and division.?Their October book report is creating a storybook mobile after reading a fantasy or science fiction book.

Monroe

Due to the anticipation of a large voter turnout, the polling location at Monroe has been moved to the gym. The south parking lot will be open for voter parking. Monroe Watch DOGS will be on hand to assist voters.

Picture retakes with Tom Jackson will be 10 a.m. Wednesday. Afternoon pre-k students will need to come at this time if they wish to have pictures retaken or were absent on picture day.

Preview for the book fair will be Thursday. Sales will begin 5 p.m. Parents and students are invited to shop during parent/teacher conferences. The book fair will continue until Nov. 14 during regular school hours with a closing at noon Nov. 14.

Parent/teacher conferences will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon Friday. There will be no school Friday because of these conferences.
