Cleveland

First- through fifth-graders recently had library orientation. To encourage reading, the Super Reader theme this year is "Get Fired Up With Reading." To kick off the event, first- through fifth-graders and staff were given fortune cookies to wish them "good fortune" or success this school year. Students are challenged to keep track of the books or pages they read. Forms will be available in the classroom, library or on the library bulletin board. When they return their Super Reader list they can receive a prize and they get to add a scale to the wall-sized dragon. They can watch the dragon grow.

Mrs. Ibach has been visiting preschool and kindergarten classrooms. Students will visit the library and check out their first library book in the next several weeks. Students also will be able to participate in the Super Reader Challenge and record the titles of books they read or that someone reads to them.

The Library Media Center has a Birthday Book Club. Parents, friends or relatives can donate a book to the library in honor of a Cleveland student's birthday. The adult or child can select a book from the stash of new books. The librarian will put a special bookplate in the front of the book to denote the special day and the student will receive a Birthday Book Club bookmark. The birthday boy or girl will be the first person to check out the book. Call the librarian, Sherry Ibach, at 366-5875 for questions.

Mrs. Ibach challenged students to record books they read during the summer. Students who returned their list at the beginning of the school year received a free book. Students returning their forms were: First-graders: Kate Wenger and Theo Egokbulu. Second-graders: Jaden Smicklas, Jack Tryggestad, Connor McGill, Karina Feng and Quinn Caldwell. Third-graders: Melanie Peterson and Peyton Day. Fourth-graders: John Graven, Rachel Ekogbulu, Nate White, Brady Bell, and Brooklyn Greene. Fifth-graders: Payal Patel, Hayden Allen, Venise Hawkins, and Garrett Bell.

"Flight" enrichment group for fifth-graders has started. This unit will be ongoing throughout first semester. They will study history of aviation, elements of flight and careers in aviation. Cleveland principal Ty Bell will be the guest instructor for flight.

Boomerang Night will be Tuesday. Enjoy dinner at Boomerang and be sure to let your cashier know you are from Cleveland Elementary.

Cleveland Cubs will be "Going for the Gold" in the Jog-a- thon Sept. 26. The school will kick off that event with Family Fun Night Sept. 25.

Monroe

"Not the Average Curriculum Night" was a huge success. The parents were informed about school policies such as CARES (cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy and self-control) and the different types of learning that make Monroe an A+ school. The PTA held its first meeting and asked for help by saving box tops and getting Homeland cards that benefit Monroe. At the end of the meeting all were treated to a song written by Cindy Scarberry called "Not the Average" and performed by Ms. Scarberry and Ms. Gerbrandt.

The annual WatchDOGS (Dads of Great Students) meeting will be Tuesday. Pizza and sodas will be available for dads and their Monroe children. If you are interested in being in the Watch DOGS program but cannot make it to the meeting, call the school office.

Individual school pictures will be taken Friday.

The jogathon envelopes came home in Thursday folders last week and students should be collecting pledges.

The PTA Family Picnic will be the night before the jogathon Sept. 25. Bring a picnic and a blanket. Dessert will be provided by the PTA.

Kennedy

First-graders recently celebrated Teddy Bear Day. They got to talk about their bears, draw bears and do other activities with them. They also talked about colors. The highlight of the unit was when primary colors were mixed using an overhead projector and food coloring. Ms. Jackson and Ms. Brinker's class also made their own color wheels.

Mr. Corbett's fourth grade class is learning how to build and maintain their own class Web site. The class also has begun "Postcards From Around the World" where they will send a postcard to other schools in another state or country and ask them about their way of life. Mr. Corbett thinks of his students as "TAGCs" or, Technologically Advanced Global Citizens. To offer something to this project, visit the class Web site www.mrcsfourthgrade.webnode.com.

Kennedy School recently held its Curriculum Night. Parents were sent on a scavenger hunt to meet the various resource people who work at the school.
