Summer can fly to the south with the geese

NORMAN — I’m not a morning person. Ask my husband. He is never greeted in the morning with a sweet smile and a friendly “Good morning.” Mostly he is told by a disheveled wife that she’s grumpy. The other day I think I even announced that I was more grumpier than normal. He looked a little scared, ran to the kitchen and got me a diet cola. Diet cola is the only antidote for my morning meanness.

I usually wake up every morning mad at him for something either he did overnight. He usually kicks, snores or tosses around the bed like a fish out of water. Sometimes it’s all of the above. In some cases I’ve even been mad at him for something he did to me in a dream.

And lately I’ve not been too thrilled with Mother Nature. I’m not really sure what us Okies have done to really get on her last nerve, but we sure have had our fair share of weather related troubles. Blizzards for Christmas. Blizzards in January and just when we thought spring had sprung we were hit with a blizzard in March. Then comes summer. Mother Nature didn’t take it easy on us then either. She hit us hard with dry, hot days that seemed like they were never going to end. She pelted us and she pelted us hard.

But, lately it’s been a lot easier to tolerate Mother Nature and mornings. The past couple of weeks, like clockwork, you can hear a flock of geese flying over my house. It’s usually around 8 a.m. I guess those birds are in a hurry to get where they are going. Now, granted they seem to have an uneven flying pattern. Some of the geese seem to be flocking the wrong way, but they are still flying in some southern direction which can only signal the beginning of fall. My favorite season.

Soon we’ll be able to turn off the air conditioners and open the windows. Instead of shorts we’ll grab jackets and sweaters. The leaves will turn orange, red and brown and our eyes will celebrate the change of the season.

I generally don’t like summer. I see nothing to like about it. It’s hot and I’m usually swatting at bugs. Two things that make me grumpy. Grumpier than I am in the mornings.

So, if Mother Nature wants to make peace she had better give us a good fall. One that last up until December. After all, us Okies are here to say “Lighten up lady. We are a hearty bunch, but enough is enough.”
