Norman — Kennedy Elementary
Twelve students recently attended Get The Lead Out workshops for artists and writers in fourth through eighth grades. Fourth-grader Chloe Crelia won an award for her photography entry.
Hunter Hatley and Atticus Johnson prepared and presented a project for State Superintendent Sandy Garret’s annual Technology Day at the Capitol. The boys also met with Oklahoma legislators and spent the day viewing other projects across the state.
Students in Mrs. Ashley’s fifth grade class have been managing an educational toy or game on their favorite topic, such as the solar system, dinosaurs and historical people. After their projects are completed, the students will play with each other’s games and toys and share what they have learned.
Kennedy answered 130,782 math questions correctly during Worth Maths Day March 3. The following students answered the most questions correctly in their classrooms: Dainece’yea Drennon and Nathan Sandlin, first grade; Derek Richards, Nicolas Hall, Samuel Brather and Elias Montoya, second grade; Erin Williams and Dylan Prince, third grade; Riley Rea and Andrew Irons, fourth grade; Cheyanne Bettelyoun, Hope King and Brooke Cheek, fifth grade.
The top 10 students for the entire school for the math contest were D.J. Denton, fifth grade; Aubrey Hall, second grade; Andrew Irons, fourth grade; Adriannne Hanley, fifth grade; Nicolas Hall, second grade; Brooke Cheek, fifth grade; Cheyanne Bettelyoun, fifth grade; Samuel Bratcher, second grade; Dylan Prince, third grade. The school champion was Riley Rea, fourth grade.
Norman High School
The Norman High National Forensic League chapter notched three qualifying events March 4 to 6 at the University of Oklahoma for the league’s national tournament to be held this summer in Kansas City, Mo.
The chapter also was named Leading Chapter in the West District by the league.
The winning students and events are: Jan Schlupp and Tiomo Landes, public forum debate; Bobby Greeson, humorous interpretation; and Kaylan Aksel and Nicole Keith, duo interpretation.
All Saints Catholic School
The chess team was named the 2010 Oklahoma State Champions in the kindergarden to fourth grades division last week after competing at the University of Oklahoma. Individual winners included Parth Patel, Arnold Sison, Karina Fang and Jordan Babb.
Eighth-grader Jacob Ruhl has qualified for the State National Geographic Bee. After winning the local bee, Jacob took the written test and received a qualifying score for the state competition. He will compete at state April 9 at Oklahoma State University.
Four students received first place awards at the Central Oklahoma Regional Science Fair at the University of Central Oklahoma. Rachel Strouhal, Hannah Williams and Charya Ratwatte each won in their categories for the seventh through ninth grades divisions. The three will compete at the State Science Fair in Ada later this month.
Other science fair awards included Anthony Nunno, first place in his category in the sixth grade division; Claire Smith, GeologyAward; and Rachel Strouhal, won awards from the Navy, Air Force, Society of Professional Engineers and the American Society of Materials.
Enrollment for fall 2010 is open. Admission packets can be downloaded from the school’s Web site at www.allsaintsnorman.org or picked up from the school office.
The new gymnasium is almost completed. School officials expect to begin using the gym May 1.
March 22 is a professional day. There is no school.
The SEES Science club will meet 2:45 p.m. March 24.
March 26 is Hat Day. Students can bring $1 to donate to cancer research.
There is an ongoing campaign to donate pennies for the organization Pennies for Peace, headed by Greg Mortensen, who is scheduled to visit OU in April.
