It doesn’t seem possible that this is Terry Hendrix’s 14th LP, but that’s what the press sheet states. Her first was 1996’s “Two Dollar Shoes,” and all have been self-released. Averaging a well-crafted and artistically attractive album every year for that long is a testament to the child’s heart, soul and pipes.
The 2002 Grammy winning singer-songwriter is well known in Oklahoma for her recordings and her many live performances here. She has played Norman’s Winter Wind concert series, countless times at OKC’s Blue Door and the Woody Guthrie Festival in Okemah. At most of those performances, Hendrix has been accompanied by long-time collaborator, back-up musician and record producer Lloyd Maines.
“Cry Till You Laugh” is a hefty 15 tracks of Hendrix’s wide-eyed view of life. These songs range from “Roll On” about being stranded in a Michigan blizzard after an Ann Arbor Folk Festival to “Hula Mary,” celebrating a free spirit who hip rolls her hula hoop in a Virgin Islands saloon. “Hand Me Down Blues” might make you weep, but “Whatachoice” is a laugher.
Hendrix really will have you crying until you laugh.
