Firehouse director’s first art show at center opens tonight

Norman —

Firehouse Arts Center Executive Director Douglas Shaw Elder will show his own work in an exhibit at the center for the first time since taking the position in 2007.

“People and patrons were always asking what kind of arts I do,” he said.

Elder held off at first, thinking it maybe inappropriate to show his own work. He conceded, however, as more and more people began requesting a show. The exhibit opens tonight.

Elder submitted 21 pieces for the exhibit, which he says is different from what he usually creates. He explained that this one is more abstract than other sculptures he has completed.

Generally, and maybe because his training was based in this style, Elder said he sticks to more representative/figurative works. People are bombarded with images, he said, he tries to get to the heart of what he has to say.

The exhibit, inspired by the ancient art of Amlash and Egypt uses materials such as common plywood to create bold shapes.

Showing with him is Norman jewelry artist Elyse Bogart.

“I’m pretty eclectic,” said Bogart. “Everything I do is one of a kind.”

For the show, Bogart has created seven pieces based on operatic heroines Cio-Cio-San from “Madame Butterfly,” Lucia from “Lucia di Lammermoor” and Violetta from “La traviata.”

Most of the pieces are vaguely abstract in their relation to the opera and the opera heroine. Some pieces are symbolic. One piece is more direct in its relation to the opera.

“One of them is more literal than I ever intended,” said Bogart. “But sometimes that’s the way it turns.”

Bogart’s pieces not in the operatic collection include seven technique-driven pieces. There will be a variety of neck pieces, pins, bracelets and earrings in the exhibit.

Elder and Bogart’s exhibit will run through April 30. A reception will be 7 to 9 p.m. March 26 at the Firehouse Arts Center Gallery, 444 S. Flood Ave. The gallery is free and is open between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
