NORMAN — Norman North High School senior Kelsey Hernandez was honored in a ceremony at the school Tuesday morning announcing her selection to the 2013 U.S. Army All-Star Marching Band.
One of only 125 seniors nationwide, Hernandez will lend her talents to the band playing French horn, after passing a highly competitive taped audition process.
Hernandez and fellow All-Stars will perform during halftime at the largest celebration of high school football in the country, the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.
Flanked by her parents, Hernandez was presented with a special jacket and baseball cap by Lt. Col. Mark Depew of the University of Oklahoma and was applauded by a standing-room-only crowd of North students and fellow band members.
“I’m so thankful to all my family, friends and school community who made this possible,” Hernandez said. “I’m very honored and grateful to be a part of this.”
Hernandez’s father, North Band Director Trent Davis also thanked the school community and administrators for their support.
“This will be a great opportunity for Kelsey and a great opportunity for our school and district to be represented. It’s my hope that more students participate in the future. This is a wonderful program and experience,” Davis said. “We’ve already talked to incoming seniors and juniors about auditioning. This is a great program to be involved in.”
The All-American Bowl game will be Jan. 5 and will be televised live on NBC at noon. To watch a live streaming of the marching band’s halftime show that day, visit allamericagames.tv.
