Playground won’t hurt parking

NORMAN — Madison and McKinley elementary schools still will park cars during the University of Oklahoma games, despite worries that their fenced-in playgrounds would fumble parking capabilities.

“No way,” said Sara Adams, president of the Parent Teacher Association at Madison, quickly when asked, adding that the fence includes a gate that opens into the playground.

The schools’ Parent Teacher Associations have used funds raked in on game days to supplement their schools’ incomes for as long as many can remember, with money going toward library books, teaching materials, equipment and technology.

“National championship years, it’s great,” said Helen Parker, president of McKinley’s PTA, of the cash raised during football games because of both schools’ close proximity to the stadium.

Parker, president of McKinley’s PTA, said parking in their lot is $10 and usually begins four hours before kick-off.

The same rate and hours apply for Madison Elementary, said Sara Adams, president of the PTA at Madison and fourth grade teacher.

Both said parking at the schools is plentiful.

Adams said parking at Madison is “pretty endless,” since the school utilizes its playground, along with its side lot and the parking lot that runs along Reaves Park.

“We have a couple of dads that are mad scientists and have made diagrams to figure out the parking,” Parker said.

The first OU football game is Saturday against Utah State.
