Scholastic book fairs hosted in Norman

NORMAN — Norman book lovers are invited to visit area public schools this week to support the expansion of the schools’ collections by expanding their own.

Hosted by staff, parent/student volunteers and Scholastic publishing, the schools are selling Scholastic books to raise money for more books on their library shelves.

According to Norman High School librarian Calypso Gilstrap, the annual fair is about fostering a love of reading for pleasure through the acquisition of “fun” books.

“Through this fair, we hope to encourage pleasure reading in students and the community,” Gilstrap said. “We’ve been planning since last spring, and for the past six weeks, we’ve had students participate in publicity for the fair and even baked goods for Friday’s Starbooks Cafe from the food class. We try to get everyone involved.”

This week marks the third annual book fair for Norman High, which will continue 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday in the school’s library.

Gilstrap estimated around 500 books for sale on Monday and called Monday morning a “strong start,” with $300 raised in just the first few hours. NHS fair organizers and volunteers hope to exceed last year’s $2,000 in funds raised through book sales.

A special feature of all the schools’ book fairs is that, in addition to the on-site fair, shoppers also can browse the selection and purchase books online through a special host site on scholastic.com — a feature that adds to the selection and extends the length of each fair, increasing potential funds raised.
