NORMAN — Jefferson Elementary School received the Rookie of the Year award at the recent Schools for Healthy Lifestyles Annual Awards Reception.
“I think it’s ironic that we received the Rookie of the Year Award, considering we’re the oldest school in the district,” said Principal Kathy Taber at the last Norman Public Schools Board of Education meeting, where the school was recognized for the award.
Jefferson entered the Schools for Healthy Lifestyles program in the fall of 2009.
According to a news release, during its year as a SHL school, Jefferson hosted Adopt-A-Doc and Adopt-A-Dentist, including a visit from the Mobile Dental Van. The school also held its own Family University, which included zumba and healthy cooking demonstrations.
“Jefferson Elementary took off this first year as part of SHL, adopting the program’s focus areas throughout the entire school community,” said Lindsi Lemons, Schools for Healthy Lifestyles Program director.
Schools for Healthy Lifestyles is a not-for-profit organization formed in 1997 to combat Oklahoma’s declining health status, according to a news release. The organization serves more than 57 schools across the state.
