Victories for gun owners

NORMAN — Don’t look for too many Norman residents openly carrying firearms today. There may be a few, but other states that have enacted open carry statutes say the novelty soon wears off.

The statue goes into effect today, allowing an estimated 141,000 Oklahomans with a license to carry a concealed weapon to openly display them in a holster or belt. Norman police explained their procedures to a packed house Monday at city hall.

Oklahoma becomes the 15th state to allow people with a license to openly carry firearms. Some gun rights advocates took advantage of the law and had breakfasts wearing their sidearms early today.

Another gun law that goes into effect today involves confiscation fears. Senate Bill 1760 prevents the governor or any local official from taking firearms and ammunition during a declared state of emergency.
