Bringing domestic violence awareness to forefront

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — The purple T-shirts, ribbons and scarves expected to be worn tonight at the monthly Second Friday Art Walk in downtown Norman are more than just fashion statements. They are worn to show support for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

It’s a way to show support for victims of violence and to help raise awareness of the issue. Organizers of the event include the Women’s Resource Center, the Justice Alliance and the Cleveland County Response Team.

Domestic violence affects one in four women in their lifetime. In the United States, it strikes more than 145 times each hour. It knows no racial or socio-economic boundaries.

On average, four women are murdered by their partners every day. A federal grant funds a domestic violence prosecutor position in the district attorney’s office.
