No fearing these beards

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — There was a time in Norman when many men grew beards during April in anticipation of a week of 89er Day activities. That was a convenient excuse to put that razor in the drawer for a few weeks.

But that tradition died years back. The new month for not shaving is November, as in No-Shave November. It began in November 2011 when 40 men participated and raised $17,000 for the United Way of Norman. That 40 has grown to about 100 this year, with bankers, insurance agents and even the sheriff joining in the event.

They hope to raise $50,000 to help push this year’s United Way campaign over the top by month’s end.
