NORMAN — Another fatality crash on State Highway 9 on the east side of Norman this past week has rural residents calling for better and more consistent traffic enforcement on the roadway.

The problem is two-fold: Speeding and following too closely. One regular highway driver said his weekday commute now resembles a “demolition derby.” Vehicles that try and travel the speed limit and keep the proper distance from other travelers are the exception.

Norman police and sheriff’s deputies rarely ticket drivers for following too closely. Speeding tickets are more likely. Passing on the right shoulder is common, too.

Improvements, such as turn lanes at major section line road intersections, help, but it’s still up to drivers to make the road safer for everyone.
