A simple gift of lodging

NORMAN — The Sunday afternoon concert of the Norman Philharmonic Orchestra didn’t quite fill the pews at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church. But it was a great showing for a holiday weekend when many were ready for a nap after the relatives left the house.

It was a benefit for Food and Shelter, a longtime downtown Norman charity that helps with meals and lodging for those in need. It began as an outreach of McFarlin. Images of the organization’s clients were projected on a screen above the orchestra.

The goal was to provide 500 nights of lodging for shelter clients. Although Food and Shelter has some beds, they usually purchase motel nights for clients. Expansion of the organization’s own lodging is planned.

The Philharmonic’s next concert will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Nancy O’Brian Center for the Performing Arts, 1809 Stubbeman Ave.
