NORMAN — The Oklahoma committee put together to look into school security following the Sandy Hook massacre holds its first meeting today. Two local men are members of that panel.

Jerry McConnell, director of facility operations at Moore Norman Technology Center and Darry Stacy, District 2 Cleveland County Commissioner, are part of the task force headed by Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb.

Mr. Lamb told the Tulsa World that every aspect of school safety — except gun control — is on the table. Gun control, he said, is a federal issue.

Meanwhile, across the capitol, lawmakers filed more than two dozen bills to expand gun rights. They range from allowing any teacher with a license to carry a gun to school to allowing any Oklahoman to carry a gun in their vehicles without a permit.

Mr. Lamb also told The World he wanted the group’s recommendations in time to present to the legislature this session.

“We don’t want anything to come out of the commission with a huge price tag,” Lamb said. “We don’t want to put a lot of new mandates on the schools.”
