An anniversary to celebrate

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — The Norman Philharmonic Orchestra turned away several hundred persons wanting to attend last year’s inaugural concert inside the Nancy O’Brian Center for the Performing Arts, 1809 Stubbeman Avenue.

For an arts event, it’s a good problem to have. Attendance at such events has declined throughout the country.

Some chamber orchestras have closed their doors due to declining sponsorship and ticket sales.

The $10 tickets to the 3 p.m. Sunday first anniversary performance will be available at the door but we suggest concertgoers without tickets get there early this year. About 100 Norman Public School students have been invited to sing and play instruments along with the orchestra.

Composer Michael Daugherty will be on hand Sunday. Three of his works will be performed. They range from the delicate to a timpani solo. When was the last time you saw a percussionist out front?

We look for a few surprises at Sunday afternoon’s concert. See you there.
