Parades for the veterans

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Local veterans and their families will be saluted this weekend in two area parades.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday in Blanchard, veterans will be honored on Main Street. The Blanchard festivities include a chili cook-off.

At 2 p.m. Sunday, the Norman Veterans Day parade will start on James Garner Avenue and proceed south on Jenkins Avenue to Constitution Avenue.

It will end at the Cleveland County Veterans Memorial in Reaves Park. Activities, which begin at 4 p.m., include an F-16 flyover and a speech by Brig. Gen. James Richardson, the deputy commanding general for III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas.

Norman, which had its first Veterans Day Parade in many years in 2011, is hoping to build on the success of last year’s event.
