Red Ribbon Week begins

The Norman Transcript

NORMAN — Red Ribbon Week, a good time to talk to children about the dangers of drug abuse, begins today. This week’s goal is to encourage families to talk about prevention at home and in neighborhoods.

Studies show that substance abuse risks lessen when children talk to their parents about the dangers of drugs. It’s often a hard conversation but one that can be initiated through the weeklong campaign. Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country.

It began in in 1985 after the murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Parents, youth and teachers in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the destruction caused by drugs. 

Many Norman students will be part of the campaign, which reaches 80 million students worldwide.
