CASA volunteer training starts soon

NORMAN — Cleveland County Court Appointed Special Advocates is currently in need of child advocate volunteers.

The next volunteer advocate training session is scheduled to begin with a volunteer orientation class at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Norman Regional Health System Education Center, 901 N. Porter Ave.

CASA training is free and open to the public. Training is approximately 30 hours and includes juvenile court docket observation. Sessions begin at 5:30 p.m. and last approximately two to two-and-a-half hours long, unless otherwise noted.

CASA volunteers speak for the interests of approximately 100 abused and neglected children in the community. However, they continue to receive referrals of children who need advocates. The program serves children in Cleveland, McClain and Garvin counties.

“They (the children) need a voice in court — someone who is only there to represent their best interests — someone to urge the system to work harder to find them safe, permanent and loving homes either back with their parents or through adoptive placements,” a CASA press release stated. “We hope you will consider providing a voice for a child in the child welfare/juvenile justice system.”

Since training is hosted during the dinner hour, bringing a brown bag or carry-out meal is encouraged. Dress is casual.

Participants may register by email to suzanne@clevelandcountycasa.org or by calling the CASA office at 360-5295.
