Wear Purple Day today

NORMAN — As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Norman United Against Domestic Violence campaign encourages residents of Norman to wear purple today to show support for victims of domestic violence.

“Wearing purple (today) is a way for our community to remember and honor those killed through domestic violence, and it’s an affirmative show of support for those who live through it every day,” said JoAnn Smith, Executive Director of the Women’s Resource Center.

The effort is being undertaken by a coalition of groups, including the Cleveland County Response Team, Norman Justice Alliance and the Women’s Resource Center.

Organizers will have an awareness information booth at the Second Friday Art Walk today in the downtown arts district. The booth will provide information about the signs and dynamics of domestic violence, including information about stalking and abusive dating relationships.

Information also will be available about how people can access safety and support. Staff from the Women’s Resource Center and other agencies will be available to answer questions.

Those attending the art walk also are asked to wear purple.

The Women’s Resource Center will be hosting a silent witness display at the end of the month. The display will be shown from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Lowry Room of the Norman Public Library.

Numerous life-size cutouts representing the women, men, children and infants killed through domestic violence will be set up in the room.

For more information about domestic violence services in Norman, contact the Women’s Resource Center at wrcnorman.com or call 364-9424. The crisis line is 701-5540.
