Charges filed in disc golf robbery at Norman park

NORMAN —  A Norman man has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon in the November case of the disc golf course robbery at a Norman park.

Norman police completed their investigation related to the robbery of a disc golfer at the Northeast Lions Park the morning of Nov. 17.

Charles Wayne Millican, 45, surrendered to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office Thursday afternoon, at which time he was processed and released after posting bond. Charges were filed this past week.

Norman investigators developed valuable information from cooperating witnesses after Millican allegedly sold the victim’s golf discs to another disc golfer at Will Rogers Park in Oklahoma City. Police officials said the course was a “very unusual locale for a robbery.”

The victim was Ryan Milam, 21, of Norman. Following the publication of Milam’s story in the Transcript, people from the community reached out to help restore the discs which were stolen from him by a man he described as dressed in black and wearing a black bandana across his face. During the robbery, Milam said the robber wielded a gun and a crowbar. He told police the gun didn’t look real, but the crowbar did, and he relinquished his property without protest.

Capt. Tom Easley of the Norman Police Department said Milam’s caution was the smart thing to do.

Milam said he was given discs and golf paraphernalia to replace what was stolen. Businesses and individuals who helped include Sooner Disc Golf, Play It Again Sports Norman, 19th Hole LLC., Stan Herman, Tina Harjo, Innova Champion Discs, Kathryn Schwartz, Joshua Karstetter, and Kris “Sparky” Molskness.

Milam said once what he lost was replaced he began to decline continued generous offers from people wanting to help. He also declined cash contributions even though $150 was stolen from him that day.
