Stabbing victim in critical condition; suspect charged

NORMAN — A man who allegedly stabbed a family member in northwest Norman earlier this week was charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon Wednesday at the Cleveland County Courthouse.

Police arrested Ryan Merle Corley, 23, on Monday on complaints of assault and battery with intent to kill.

Corley had been detained after police and other agencies responded to a domestic disturbance and stabbing call about 11:30 a.m. Monday at 4210 Hunters Hill Road.

EMSStat had transported the stabbing victim, Freddie Yazzie, to the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City for treatment of injuries described as possibly life threatening.

Police said Wednesday Yazzie is in intensive care. His condition is critical but stable.

Corley lived with his mother, Sheryl Yazzie, and Freddie Yazzie at the residence. Corley’s son was at the residence at the time of the incident.

According to the affidavit, Sheryl Yazzie stated Corley arrived at the residence and was mad about something when he kicked in the bedroom door, where she and Freddie were and where the fight between Corley and Freddie Yazzie began.

Sheryl Yazzie indicated that Corley went to the kitchen and grabbed a long, glass object, which he started swinging at Freddie Yazzie, and then she saw blood.

The affidavit stated that Corley said he had gone to the store for some yarn and when he returned to the residence, his son was sitting on the couch in tears. His son told him that Sheryl Yazzie was in the back room crying.

When Corley went to the back bedroom and could not get the door open, he kicked it in. Corley then indicated that Freddie went to the closet to possibly get a weapon, although Corley didn’t know of any weapons in the closet, aside from maybe a hammer.

The affidavit then stated that Corley went to the bathroom to get a knife, and as Freddie was coming from the closet, he “shanked” him a couple times.

When Corley was asked what he was trying to do when he stabbed Freddie, he advised “he was trying to kill him.”

Judge Tracy Schumacher will hear the case at the Cleveland County Courthouse. A preliminary hearing conference will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18.
