Speeding driver eludes police; no arrest yet

NORMAN — A driver speeding in a car that had been reported stolen managed to get away from a police pursuit and a search involving a helicopter and K-9 in east Norman early Tuesday, police said.

Police Lt. Justin Wishon reported seeing the small Chevrolet pickup speeding on Stae Highway 9 near Marshall Avenue about 4 a.m. Tuesday, according to a news release from the Norman Police Department.

The officer reported the vehicle continued eastbound on Highway 9 as he attempted to stop it. The vehicle went north on 24th Avenue Southeast and turned into the neighborhoods in that area. The vehicle was observed traveling at a high rate of speed going east on Wheatland Drive.

Police lost sight of the vehicle for a short period and found it stopped and abandoned at the east dead end of Wheatland Drive near a wooded area.

With the assistance of the Oklahoma City Police Department Helicopter, a search was conducted. Several police officers and a K-9 were deployed in an attempt to locate the suspect. The vehicle was later determined to be stolen out of Del City. The driver was not found and there is not a description available, police said.

Although the driver is not believed to still be in the area, officers will conduct extra patrols in the area today, according to the police news release. As of Wednesday, no arrests had been made.
