Two residences hit by morning blazes

NORMAN — Norman Fire Department responded to two residential fires in the early morning hours Wednesday.

Firefighters responded to a house fire at 7 a.m. in Norman at 1501 Parkview Terrace. The home’s occupant, a female, was outside with minor injuries when responders arrived. The female refused treatment by paramedics and was released at the scene.

Firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions coming from the front of the single-story structure upon arrival. The occupant of the home notified the firefighters of at least four cats and two dogs in the house.

When firefighters entered the structure, they rescued two cats and found the bodies of several cats and two dogs. Animal control was called to the scene and removed the animals from the residence.

Fire crews contained the fire in 15 minutes and remained on scene for several hours to put out hot spots. Preliminary damage is estimated to be $48,000.

Three fire stations and 20 firefighters responded to the scene, as well as EMSStat paramedics and Norman police. The fire is under investigation by the Norman Fire Marshal’s office.

Earlier Wednesday, Norman firefighters responded to a call that came in around 2 a.m. at SE 149th and Peebly Road in Oklahoma City. Deputy Fire Chief Jim Bailey said it was an unincorporated area and when Norman crews arrived, the home was fully involved.

The fire took place in Little Axe’s jurisdiction. Little Axe Fire Chief Al Schneider said the structure was a vacant residence and it was a complete loss. It took crews a couple hours to completely extinguish the fire, Schneider said.

Firefighters from Little Axe, Norman’s Station 5, Oklahoma City and Cedar County responded to the fire.
