Volleyball

• New league on tap

Junior Spikers, a new youth volleyball league offered by the City of Norman Parks and Recreation Department, is now accepting registrations for fall. This instructional league for children in the third through sixth graders is aimed at not only teaching participants the proper way to play the sport of volleyball, but good sportsmanship and the fundamentals of working as a member of a team.

Registration will be accepted through Aug. 28 at either the Irving Recreation Center at 125 Vicksburg Ave. or the Parks and Recreation main office at 201 W. Gray. Registration forms may also be downloaded at WWW.normanfun.com The cost is $50 per person, and includes a team shirt. Teams are guaranteed 6 matches. League play will begin the week of Sept. 14.

Camps

•City hosts camp

The Norman Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Speed and Agility Camp at Whittier Recreation Center from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 3-7, for ages 7 -12, at a cost of $75 per child.

Speed and Agility Camp will help athletes develop proper foot work, quickness and speed. This camp will teach the athletes how to properly work out and run faster.

Golf

• NHS tourney set

A four-person scramble golf tournament is slated for Monday, Aug. 10 at Norman’s Westwood Golf Course. The tournament is a fundraiser for the Norman High School band and orchestra programs.

Four-person scramble teams will play with individual players being assigned teams. The shotgun start is 8 a.m. Entry fee is $75 per player or $300 per team if entered before July 31. Entry fees Aug. 1 through Aug. 6 will be $100 per person or $400 per team. Fees include cart, green fee, lunch, tee gift, door prizes and musical entertainment.

Prizes will be awarded for the longest drive, top teams, closest to the pin and door prizes.

“We’ve got some great prizes like our 5-day Carnival Caribbean Cruise or 4-day Las Vegas trip with air fare for our longest drive winner,” event organizer Diane Schroeder announced. “This is our inaugural golf tournament and our community has responded with so much enthusiasm and support.”

Sponsors and donors of merchandise or services will be recognized throughout the year in the programs at all NHS Band and Orchestra concerts and events as well as at the tournament with signs and event t-shirts. Sponsorship levels include a $100 hole sponsor, $200 Super Sponsor, and $500 Mega Sponsor.

Cycling

• Weekly rides set

The Bicycle League of Norman’s weekly rides have started back up. The Tuesday night rides begin at 6:30 p.m. at Brookhaven Village. Thursday night rides begin at 6:30 p.m. at Reaves Park.

Football

• CAB to hold luncheon

The Citizens Advisory Board of Cleveland County Child Welfare Unit is hosting its annual Coaches Luncheon. University of Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops and his staff will give highlights for the upcoming season from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 at Journey Church, 3801 Journey Pkwy.

Sponsorship ranges from $600 for a table of 10 to $325 for a table of five. Proceeds benefit the Secret Santa and the Special Needs program developed by C.A.B. For more information, call Sean Crandall at 833-3568.
