NRHS gives Jerry D. Leu M.D. Excellence Award

Norman Regional Health System recently celebrated quality initiatives with the Jerry D. Leu M.D. Excellence Award breakfast.

The Dr. Leu Healthcare Excellence Award was presented to the Maternal Child Health Team for their work in reducing necrotizing enterocolitis in fragile neonatal intensive care infants. Their project, “Delivery to Pump — Premature Infant Feeding” focused on recent research that demonstrated NICU babies that received formula versus breast milk had a three-fold increase in NEC as well as 30 percent morbidity rate. Since implementation of the program there have been no infant deaths or transfers due to NEC and the babies are showing a 5 percent weight gain on average.

The Jerry Leu, MD Healthcare Excellence Award was established in 2007 to recognize process improvement teams within Norman Regional Health System. Most hospitals within the United States, including Norman Regional, have performance improvement departments that work with teams of clinicians and staff throughout the hospital to improve healthcare processes and patient care.

Leu was a member of the Norman Regional Health System medical staff for more than 35 years and served as vice president of medical affairs from May 2000 through May 2006.

Each invited team from the Health System presented their work and explained how their quality program has improved patient care for the community. Overall, six teams presented projects.
