Pre-kindergarten program space available

Pre-kindergarten is a voluntary, half-day program offered to the community, with spaces still available at many elementary sites. Students must be 4-years-old on or before Sept. 1. Morning sessions are 8-10:30 a.m. and afternoon sessions are 12:15-2:45 p.m.

Transportation will not be provided under any circumstances. Classes are taught by certified early childhood teachers and a teacher assistant, with a maximum class size of 20 students.

Norman Public Schools pre-kindergarten program fosters all areas of development: intellectual, language, physical and social, emotional within an active, appropriate early childhood environment. This early learning opportunity uses play and hands-on materials as a means of discovering and learning concepts that are of high interest to this age group.

Requirements for enrolling are two proofs of residency, a copy of an official birth certificate and current immunization records.

Should parents have questions about any aspect of the program or the enrollment procedures, they can call the Norman Public Schools Early Childhood Director's office, 573-3548.

    Open House for Norman High School will be 6:30 p.m.- 8 p.m. Aug. 26. Parents are encouraged to follow their student's class schedule and meet their teachers. There will be a freshman orientation meeting for parents in the library 8-9 p.

  • Several new administrators named to NPS Administrators who are new to the district or who are in new positions for the 2008-2009 school year include:

    Dr. Bob Neel, director of transportation, is coming to Norman from Elizabeth, Colo., where he served as superintendent of Elizabeth C-1 School District since August 2006.

  • Norman Public Schools graduation requirements explained The State of Oklahoma requires all students to complete a required course of study equal to 23 credits before graduating from high school. Fifteen of the credits must be attained in science, math, language arts, social studies and the arts.

  • Elementary back-to-school night Back-to-school night is an annual event in Norman and will be held at all elementary schools 5:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 18. This event gives students and their parents the opportunity to visit their classroom, meet the teacher and get acquainted with other students who will be in their class for this school year.

    Meal service begins Aug. 20 in all schools. Breakfast and lunch will be served at Adams, Cleveland, Eisenhower, Jackson, Jefferson, Kennedy, Lakeview, Lincoln, Madison, Monroe, Truman, Washington, Wilson, Alcott, Irving, Longfellow, Whittier, Dimensions Academy, Norman High School and Norman North High School.
