NORMAN — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops announced on his radio show Tuesday that freshman tight end Taylor McNamara has had season-ending shoulder injury and will receive a medical redshirt.
It leaves OU with sophomore Geneo Grissom and junior Brannon Green as the only scholarship tight ends.
It's not much, but the spot has been greatly reduced in the offense this season. Green has three catches through seven games. McNamara, who hadn't played in the last five games, and Grissom haven't had a reception.
At the current pace, OU's tight ends will finish the season with less than 20 receptions for the first time since 1999.
The reason for the de-emphasis on the spot in the passing game is the emergence of two other positions. Slot receivers Jalen Saunders and Ryan Broyles have 40 receptions on the season. Fullback Trey Millard has 15 catches.
